The legend says that Yamato Takeru-no-mikoto, the ancient Japanese emperor, planted the tree when he led an expeditionary force to the east, and this episode is the origin of the tree’s name. Also in the 13th century, when Saint Nichiren, feeling distress at the tree’s decline, prayed for its revival, it came alive, so it is also called “Myoho (true dharma) Zakura.” The tree has been selected as one of the new best 100 trees in Japan.
