The Yamataka Jindai Cherry Blossom Tree is one of the Three Major Trees in Japan, planted on the premises of Jisso-ji Temple in Mukawacho Yamataka. The tree is a wild Edo-higan Zakura, which is estimated to be 1,800 or 2,000 years old, and has a surprisingly distinctive character. Its height is 10.3m, and its trunk is about 10m around. In the Taisho Period, it became the first nationally designated Natural Monument as one of the oldest and biggest trees in Japan. The legend says that Yamato Takeru-no-mikoto, the ancient Japanese emperor, planted the tree when he led an expeditionary force to the east, and this episode is the origin of the tree’s name. Also in the 13th century, when Saint Nichiren, feeling distress at the tree’s decline, prayed for its revival, it came alive, so it is also called “Myoho (true dharma) Zakura.” The tree has been selected as one of the new best 100 trees in Japan. Under the tree in full blossom, you can enjoy gorgeous cherry blossoms in a relaxed manner and local foods right along street stands.
