Automatic Speech Translator Field Trial
- Testing the Practical Performance of the Speech Translation System -
The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications of Japan will carry out the automatic speech translator field trial throughout Yamanashi Prefecture from January 25th,2010 to February 21st,2010 using foreign travelers in the prefecture as test users.

1. What is the Automatic Speech Translator?
- When you speak your message into the unit, the translator will automatically speak a Japanese translated version.
By switching the language setting, it will automatically translate Japanese speech and speak the result in your language. - The system offers translations in four languages. (English, Mandarin Chinese, Korean, Japanese)

- This project is being undertaken as part of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications initiative titled “Field Testing of Automatic Speech Translation Technology and Its Contribution to Local Tourism.” The field trial is run by JTB Global Marketing & Travel Inc, NEC Corporation and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology.
- When using the speech translation device, the user’s voice and translated results are automatically recorded. Each recording will undergo statistical processing and other data processing in a way in which the user and translated content (both original & translated texts) cannot be identified, and will be used for the purpose of improving the quality of the automatic translation. Recordings will not be used for any other purposes and will not be made available to the public.
