Shosen-kyo Gorge Hill Climb

Shosen-kyo Gorge Hill Climb is a course that provides excellent views of Shosen-kyo Gorge, which is in first place in the valley category of the Best 100 Tourist Sites in Japan. It has gentle slopes and a short distance, so is highly recommended for beginners. There are many shops such as souvenir shops and restaurants along the way, so visitors can enjoy the lively atmosphere of a tourist site.

*[May 1 through November 30 (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.)] The gorge road, which starts after crossing over Nagatoro-bashi Bridge, is one-way on weekdays and closed to vehicles (including bicycles) on Saturdays, Sundays, and national holidays. As such, please use the Green Line road.

Key point

It is possible to cycle while enjoying the great views here. The season of autumn leaves is especially highly recommended.

Strategy

There is a long gentle slope that can be ridden up without switching to a lower gear. The slopes are gradual with the exception of the 1.5-kilometer stretch before the finish line, which has an average gradient of about 9%. This area is especially bustling with tourists in October and November, which is the best time for viewing autumn leaves, so please take plenty of care to avoid accidents with pedestrians.

Course guide

Start at Katayamainari-jinja Shrine, which is along the Shosen-kyo Gorge Line road.

It will be possible to see a large sign for "Shosen-kyo Gorge" on the left. Many vehicles, including large buses, travel on this road during tourist season, so please be careful of this while riding.

Cross over the gorge at Nagatoro-bashi Bridge.

Pass through the stone tunnel.

When you reach Green Line road, turn left. After a while there will be a hairpin curve, and this is where the slope with an average gradient of 9% starts. This is the most difficult part of this course.

Cross over Seikan-bashi Bridge and go up the hill with rows of souvenir shops. You are almost at the finish line.

The finish line is Shosenkyo Ropeway Sengataki Station. If you take the ropeway up to "Panorama-dai," there is an amazing view.
