Plum Flowers in Minami Alps City

Many delicious fruits are grown in Minami Alps City in Yamanashi Prefecture. In particular, the highest yield of plums in Japan is grown here. Yamanashi produces the most grapes, plums, and peaches of all the prefectures in Japan.  The best time to see the plum flowers is mid-March. During the peak, the landscape of Minami Alps City is blanketed with flowers. The flowers drop from the trees, and the harvest starts in mid-June and continues until August when Kiyou plums are harvested. The Kiyou variety was born in 1996, and is characterized by having a great balance of sweetness and acidity. It is also recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the world’s heaviest plum. The best time to see the flowers in Minami Alps City is mid-March to late March.

Food in the Ninth Episode

Houtou

The houtou that Chiaki made for Nadeshiko’s family looked delicious. Even Takeda Shingen came to eat it. When you talk about Yamanashi’s local cuisine, you have to mention houtou. Houtou is a type of noodle made by kneading wheat flour into dough. It is added along with vegetables to a miso soup base. This is a dish that has been made for many years in the homes of Yamanashi people. The main components of flavor are the miso broth and kabocha squash, which can’t be left out. The soft and sweet kabocha paired with the miso broth is truly delicious. The noodles are thick and keep their firmness even when boiled. Adding vegetables like cabbage, carrots, green onions, and mushrooms is sure to fill you up. It is traditionally made in an iron pot, so it stays hot until you finish eating. It warms you up so much that even on a cold winter day you might break a sweat eating hoto. The flavor of the broth and the ingredients used to make hoto can vary depending on the area or restaurants, so it’s a great food to try at many places. There’s even a “Houtou Day” on April 10th.
