The Fuji kawaguchiko area is one of the biggest tourists attracting areas in the entire prefecture. Not only does it have relatively easy access from Tokyo but it also is home to one of the most beautiful lakes in the prefecture and of course Mt. Fuji. And so, it is quite common for there to be a large number of restaurants and other business in the area that have put in the work to be able to peacefully accommodate people from all over the nation and the world.

Just a 15-minute walk from the Fujikawaguchiko station, Choice Kitchen is one such place.

A few years back, due to health reasons, restaurant owner Mr. Makoto Iide made the decision to switch to a healthier diet and lifestyle. And so, in the midst of its boom he began to adopt a more healthier vegetable focused diet. As he followed the diet that focus on mainly holistic foods and strays away from meats, he notices his health improved greatly and he found he felt almost like a new person.

This change inspired him to want to share this with others and thus Choice Kitchen was born.

When you first enter the restaurant one thing you may notice is that its design is quite different from most Japanese restaurants. The antique western style furniture and interior remains as it was the previous owner’s hobby and gives a unique atmosphere to the restaurant. Not only that, but it also provides a buffet or salad bar style eating process. Mr. Iide mentioned in his interview with us that after spending time in America and seeing this kind of take the food yourself style restaurants he wanted to bring that over to Japan and so he did.

Around 1/4th of the customers that come to the restaurant are foreign tourists or expats and so they have worked hard to make sure that everyone can eat at comfort. Although not entirely vegan as there are chicken options along the buffet tables, the owners of Choice are proud to say that almost everything on their menu is halal. From the salad dressings that in other restaurants tend to have alcohol, to even the chicken that was prepared. Through their meticulous efforts, they even managed to receive certification so for Muslim visitors to the Yamanashi area this is one of my top recommendations (to guarantee everything is completely halal please call at least 3 days in advance).

Not to mention the food was both absolutely delicious and decently priced (plus its basically all you can eat so make sure to come hungry!). And as an added plus, the staff are both enthusiastic and genuinely kind people so if you have any questions about the food they can surely help.
