Festival Commemorating the Start of the Mt. Fuji Climbing Season

The beginning of climbing season on Mt. Fuji is on July 1 every year, marking the start of the mountain's summer season. On the day before the season's start in Fujiyoshida City, a ceremony is held to celebrate the coming of the climbing season.

On June 30th, a group of Fujiko priests and other mountain priests worshipping Mt.Fuji will gather at the Kanatorii Park in front of the first Kana-torii gate of Mt. Fuji where a traditional Shinto ritual for purification will take place. After a speech delivered by the mayor of Fujiyoshida, the entire group will march up to the Kitaguchi Hongu Fuji Sengen Shrine where the traditional opening ceremony of the Yoshida trail will take place, which includes dances and other performances. Finally, there will be a ceremony at the end to break the rope blocking the Kanatorii Gate at the end, symbolizing the start of the climbing season.

Come celebrate the beginning of climbing season on Mt. Fuji, the most sacred mountain in Japan!
