Tunnel Wine Cave

Main content starts here.

Area:Isawa/Katsunuma/Nishizawa Gorge

A tunnel built in Katsunuma-cho, Koshu City that is used to store wine. The brick tunnel was built in 1903 and is a legacy to railway culture. The tunnel is 1,100 meters long and remains unchanged from its days as the old JR Fukazawa Tunnel. It is now used to store wine for long-term aging and to add value. Throughout the year the temperature is kept between 6-14 °C, and the humidity is kept between 45-65%, which is the ideal condition for the wine to age. Approximately 1 million bottles of wine can be stored in the tunnel. There are storage units for wine makers and also individuals, and the cost of one unit, which can store up to 300 bottles, for restaurants and individuals is 2,500 yen per month. Each unit can be locked and the wine stored safely. You can take a look round near the entrance of the wine cave and the management office provides tourist information and sells wine.
