Masutomi no Yu

Located along the Hontani River at the foot of Mount Mizugaki and Mount Kinpu, the Masutomi Hot Spring Resort area sits about 1,000 meters above sea level. The hot spring has a history dating back to the time of Takeda Shingen, the warlord who ruled Kai Province (present-day Yamanashi) from 1540 to 1573. According to legend, miners digging for gold in the area discovered an underground hot spring and noticed that the water helped heal their wounds and cure their illnesses. Since that time, the Masutomi Hot Spring has been famous throughout Japan as a place to rest and recover. In the twentieth century, analysis of the hot spring water found it featured a high, but safe, level of radium content, which may explain its apparent healing properties.

The Masutomi no Yu bathhouse is a daytime onsen facility with four baths, each at a different temperature. The water is drawn directly from the spring 300 meters below ground. Masutomi no Yu also offers a variety of health and wellness programs devised by medical professionals, including yoga, nature walks, and nighttime stargazing. There is no on-site accommodation, but lodging is available nearby.
