Daibosatsutoge Pass Hill Climb

The Daibosatsutoge Pass Hill Climb is a course starting at Enzan Station and running up to the trailhead for Daibosatsutoge Pass. On this course, it is possible to enjoy city landscapes of train stations and houses, etc. gradually changing into landscapes of the deep forest. After the starting point, there is a beautiful, direct two-lane road. After making it past the hairpin curves in front of Daibosatsu-no-Yu Onsen hot spring, a steep slope starts in front of Unpo-ji Temple, and the path up the mountain gets increasingly narrow. You will then proceed upward along a river that weaves through the mountain valley. You will suddenly go from the deep forest to a place with unobstructed views and will see Kamihikawa Toge Parking Lot. The finish line offers amazing expansive views of the landscape below.

Key point

The toughest part of this is the steep slope in front of Unpo-ji Temple. This temple, which is associated with the Takeda clan, has been designated as an national important cultural property, and on the temple grounds, an Edo Higan-zakura cherry tree that is several hundred years old blooms, with its peak usually around April 20.

Strategy

The slope is gentle at the beginning of the course and then gradually gets steep, and thus the gradient increases the closer you get to the finish line. On the 8.5-km stretch from the starting point to Banya-chaya Teahouse at the middle of the course, the gradient is low at 6%, and it is best to ride the section while saving some energy. There is then a steep slope of 9% just under 8-km long up to the finish line. As you aim for the finish line, make sure not set your pace too fast and overstrain your body. The mountain road near the finish line is narrow, so please take plenty of care with regard to the oncoming vehicles of hikers.

Turn left at the traffic light and proceed up the hill. Go right at the fork and cross over Shinchino-bashi Bridge.

Daibosatsu-no-Yu Onsen hot spring will come into view. Gentle hairpin curves will start after this.

The road will get narrower as you go up, and then it will be possible to see Banya-chaya Teahouse, a cream-colored building, on the right. Just before this building, turn right up the hill.

There will be a long row of trees on the left, and then you will pass in front of Unpo-ji Temple, which is associated with the Takeda clan. This is the steepest slope of the course.

Proceed along the mountain road as it twists through the mountainsides. It will be possible to hear a mountain stream.

Kamihikawa Toge Parking Lot, which is at an elevation of 1,600 m, is the finish line. Across from here, there is a mountain hut called "Lodge Chobe." There is a road that goes directly from the mountain to Yamato-mura Village, so it is possible to go down the hill along Route 20 close to Roadside Station Kai-Yamato.
